Got my eyes on a 68 S Code that seems to be original except for engine and trans.
Does any one know the codes for how this would have been built from the factory?
The drive train is not installed and doesn't have exhaust manifolds, so I don't even know if this is a Mustang engine.
Are there any head codes I should look for or some to totally avoid?
Thanks in advance !

I'm not exactly what you're getting at, asking if we "know the codes" of how your car was built. The only codes will be on the door tag or underhood buck tag. Since you're the one looking at it, you will need to be the one to decode those. Your other option is to get a Marti report for it.

As to the engine, there's no real physical difference between the S code 390 and the typical Galaxie version. Any 390 can be built to any spec. The difference will be the heads, and you want to look for the extra bolt holes around the exhaust ports. If they just have the ones on the top and bottom, you'll have a very hard time getting exhaust to hook up to them in the Mustang engine compartment.

Sorry for not being succinct...
Being a 8R02S that matches at least vin tag to door tag, I'm fairly sure that the body is an s code, the question remains with the 'not original' 390 engine w/4 spd that has no exhaust manifold that the seller will bolt in.
I have George Reids book that unveils all the casting numbers for high performance engine parts interchange but it stops short of engine bay fittage.
I became suspect of the heads once I knew the shock towers were 'modified' but I don't know if it was for these heads or a previous installation so I still need to know what head casting code will fit and/or what was original so I know how to price my offer without offending.
Got pix of the exhaust drill pattern styles?
Thanks again in advance!

No pix handy, but it's easy enough to tell by looking. They all have bolt holes above and below the exhaust port. The Mustang heads, AKA; GT heads, have extra holes on the sides, as well. If they don't have the extra holes, they won't easily work in the Mustang. As if an FE in a Mustang is easy. ;-)

If the car is a good enough deal and is something you want, finding the right heads isn't a big problem, and wouldn't be a deal breaker for me. You could even go aftermarket, if you wanted to. Edelbrock makes a nice set.

Wayne...Thanks for the pics and your help and direction.
Yep... they are 8 bolt heads and after more research I see how the mustang heads are changed to a 14 bolt pattern.
Typical for Ford, the examples I saw were both Cast numbered C8AE-H
[ http://www.mustangtek.com/heads/C8AE-H_8bolt.html and http://www.mustangtek.com/heads/C8AE-H.html ]
You are correct about used part availabilty [I checked http://www.car-part.com/ ] so maybe I'll be able to make the drive train at least year correct.
Going to take the generic advise : If you want it, ignore the price guides and pay whatever you have to in order to get it!
